Ghosts pros at card fraud
The rate of card fraud increased from 66.9 cents to 74.7 cents per A$1000 over 2016, the Australian Payments Network said in a report this morning.Card-not-present fraud "accounted for 78 per cent of all fraud on Australian cards in 2016," the APN said.CNP fraud has lifted for four years in a row, with the APN positioning the reason as being that "as chip technology continues to provide strong protection against counterfeit cards, fraud is increasingly migrating online."Card-not-present fraud increased to $418 million, up from $363 million in 2015, the APN said.Within Australia, CNP fraud increased 28 per cent to $176 million, up from $137 million in 2015, while offshore CNP fraud increased seven per cent to $242 million. One driver, the APN said, is "criminals using 'ghost terminals'. These terminals look like real card readers but are not connected to the payments network. "Countries that have not upgraded to more secure chip technology continue to be a target for card fraud."
