Government orders inquiry into app pricing
The Australian Government has asked the Commonwealth Consumer Affairs Advisory Council to inquire into the state of the mobile applications market. The Assistant Treasurer, David Bradbury, said he had asked the CCAAC to look at the adequacy of information disclosed to consumers about costs associated with downloading digital content, including smartphone apps, and whether changes need to be made to improve the consumer experience.Bradbury said in a statement: "Consumers have raised concerns about aspects of mobile commerce, particularly where purchases can be made without much difficulty using stored credit card data.""Apps are also increasingly relying on 'in-app' purchases and subscriptions beyond the initial download. Some of these are causing consumers great frustration and cost."
