Guilty plea follows ATM frenzy
A Sydney man entered a guilty plea in Fairfield Local Court yesterday, only hours after being arrested and charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage.Police arrested Ertem Toklar, along with another man, outside the Merrylands branch of the Commonwealth Bank on Tuesday - a day on which Sydney's metropolitan media and social media fanned the idea of easy access to cash at CBA's ATMs, because of faulty operation of the bank's core systems. The bank's ATMs were operating in "offline mode", a standard response by ATM operators that enables card-holders to withdraw cash (within limits) and without reference by the bank to their available funds.Toklar used three CBA ATMs a total of 10 times to withdraw A$1500, a News Limited newspaper reported. The court bailed Toklar pending sentencing next week.
