HSBC follow along with Apple Pay
HSBC Australia is set to offer Apple Pay to its Visa and Mastercard credit card customers, the bank said yesterday. According to Graham Heunis, HSBC Australia's head of retail banking and wealth management, the bank also intends to introduce Apple Pay for its Australian Visa debit card holders "in the coming weeks". HSBC has so far introduced Apple Pay into five other markets, and insisted the choice of Australia as market number six was in response to demand from its customers, rather than a reaction to moves by domestic banks, four of whom attempted to negotiate collectively with Apple, until thwarted by the ACCC. "We launched Apple Pay in Australia based on our own timings and this was not influenced by other external factors," an HSBC spokesperson said.HSBC will be the fifteenth bank to introduce Apple Pay, A host of smaller, mutual ADIs also offer the payments option.
