Industry banks on inertia: ACCC
The banking sector trades on "assumption of commercial inertia", Marcus Bezzi, the ACCC's executive general manager told a parliamentary hearing yesterday."Transparency might be the answer," to the embedded anti-competitive tendencies in the industry, Bezzi told the Standing Committee on Economics.Comparing banking with the electricity sector, ACCC chief Rod Sims said "there's a growing discrepancy between what you pay if you stay loyal, as opposed to what a new [customer] pays.Drawing on the ACCC's recent work on the foreign exchange segment, Sims said: "Our suspicion is that they know they've got an FX customer base and don't need to be competitive."Sims also played down suggestions the ACCC was seeking to begin a comprehensive new inquiry into the banking sector. Its report last year on the mortgage market, he said, was "to see whether the banking levy was being passed on, as opposed to recommendations beyond that."?
