Insolvencies near GFC levels
The number of personal insolvencies rebounded over the March 2017 quarter and now skirt levels experienced during the great recession.The Australian Financial Security Authority recorded 7,900 instances of personal insolvency over the March quarter, around 850 more than recorded over the December 2016 quarter and 770 more than over the March quarter 2016.During the GFC and the year following, personal insolvency numbers often exceeded 9000 a quarter or ranged into the high 8000s. If there was a cyclical low, that was around 2014.Bankruptcies account for a little less than half of insolvencies and debt agreements the balance.
