IT's a batch payments crisis at Bendigo Bank
Bendigo Bank's head of technology Stella Threadgold was last night working overtime to resolve one of the worst ever IT outages to cripple the company's core banking platforms and its communications network. As the operational crisis consumed its second day yesterday (Wednesday), irate customers berated the bank for not responding to their requests for information in a timely and transparent manner. Customers began reporting problems with Bendigo's internet banking platform around 9 pm on Tuesday evening, but the bank only acknowledged the systems outage at 6am the following day.The systems failure disrupted most of the bank's transaction banking systems on Wednesday and irate customers continued to report problems accessing mobile banking services and internet banking overnight. It was a confusing experience for many Bendigo customers who were told at one point on Wednesday afternoon that online services had been restored.By late Wednesday evening Bendigo provided this update on Twitter:"Payments from yesterday and payments from today [were] processed overnight. Thank you for bearing with us. We are still working to resolve the issue with ebanking and our mobile app and are committed to resolving it ASAP."A major grievance for thousands of customers was that Centrelink payments and other direct entry requests made on Tuesday were not processed by Bendigo's faltering systems. The bank's refusal to respond earlier in the day and share frequent updates inspired a backlash on social media."A working ATM or EFTPOS terminal doesn't help when pays have not hit bank accounts," one customer observed. There was also considerable fallout on Wednesday for customers and business partners of Bendigo's subsidiary brands. The UP Bank arm said last night it was unable to process inbound and outbound online payments.UP's own Twitter update (just after 1am this morning) pushed back the latest time today at which the whole of Bendigo's core payments processing will be operating normally."We're pleased to advise that inbound payment functionality is being restored over the next few hours. Outbound payments should be enabled early [today]," UP told depositors At around 1pm in the afternoon Rural Bank notified customers on Twitter that it was working to restore phone and online services and thanked customers for their patience. However, the subsidiary did not post again on Twitter for the rest of the day.Bendigo also stranded its mortgage brokers on Wednesday. These partners were also unable to lodge home loan applications on behalf of clients through Adelaide Bank's third party loan platform. However, Amanda James, the group head of third party distribution, appeared to relay more details about the outage to brokers than the group was prepared to share via social media or with journalists."We are currently experiencing technical difficulties across a range of our systems including, ApplyOnline, Loan Connect, Online Banking, direct phone lines which includes Partner Assist and Contact Centre," she told brokers in a memo issued on Wednesday morning."All of our email systems are still operational."Mystery surrounds the status of operations at other Bendigo subsidiaries such as Delphi Bank and its four Alliance Bank partners.Neither of these arms reported any disruption to their services
