Leon Carter takes helm of FSU
The national executive of the Finance Sector Union yesterday endorsed Leon Carter as the union's national secretary. Carter, the only candidate, will take the job from the beginning of October. Carter will replace Paul Schroder who unexpectedly gave notice two weeks ago. Schroder is leaving to take a job as head of business development for Australian Super, an industry superannuation fund.At present the union's national director of operations, Carter began his union career with the Public Sector Union in Victoria in the 1990s. He then moved to work for the Finance Sector Union in its Western Australian branch, moved back to Victoria and then switched to the national office.Under a reorganisation of the FSU implemented earlier this year the union, in theory, reduced the say of paid officials, especially within the former state branches (now known as local branches). As part of this reform the FSU formed national workplace councils covering the big banks and insurance and some additional councils to cover small employers.
