Low incomes the norm
The pervasiveness of low incomes as an economic feature received rare official acknowledgement yesterday.The Treasurer announced the development of a new tax information statement that will show taxpayers how government revenue is spent.The Australian Taxation Office will send out personalised tax receipts, showing the dollar amount of the taxpayer's tax contribution that is allocated to each area of government spending, including the interest on government debt.Three examples at the Treasury website used tax payments of $5,000, $10,000 and $20,000. No aspirational $100,000 in sight.
