Margin lending market's long fade out
The margin lending market continued its long-term decline in the September quarter, with loan balances and the number of accounts falling.According to the latest Reserve Bank margin lending figures, the number of margin loan accounts fell from 137,000 in the June quarter to 132,000 in the September quarter.The decline in account numbers has been continuous since June 2013, when there were 162,000 accounts. At the market's peak in December 2009 there were 260,000 accounts.Margin loan balances fell from A$11.8 billion in June to $11.5 billion in the September quarter.The number of margin calls fell from an average of 0.67 per 1000 clients per day in the June quarter to an average of 0.57 per 1000 clients per day in the September quarter.
