Men blamed for women's 'scarcity'
Men rather than women are to blame for the scarcity of women in media and leadership, a mostly female crowd voted at a debate in Melbourne last night launching ANZ's Notable Women projectMany women "are not being heard", ANZ chief executive Mike Smith told the launch."We need to have women more strongly represented in the business finance and business press," Smith said."Notable Women is part of our commitment to help senior women build confidence and skills."Many surveys show a "lack of skills and confidence as key reasons that can stall women's careers and prevents them 'leaning in'," ANZ believes. The bank aims to "more widely improve visibility and representation in media and events," it said.ANZ is at least progressing women's careers.Forty per cent of ANZ's middle management are now women, up from 34 per cent several years ago, said Susie Babani, head of human resources at the bank.Among the top 200 executives, this ratio is 25 per cent, up from 21 per cent. Two out of 11 executives on the management committee are women. On the board two of seven directors are now women.
