MLC to price life cover based on fitness levels
National Australia Bank's wealth management division MLC will discount life insurance premiums if customers agree to use a fitness tracker and achieve a target score.MLC On Track, to be launched on November 23, will give customers the option of wearing an Intel Basic Peak fitness tracker when they sign up for life cover. They will be given a target score and have between 90 and 160 days to achieve a "target wellness score". If they reach the target they get a five per cent discount off their premium. They then have another 90 to 160 days to show that they can maintain their healthy lifestyle. If they do, they get another five per cent discount, taking the total discount to ten per cent.Factors making up the fitness score will include step count, active hours, sleep duration and average resting heart rate.MLC chief underwriter Fiona Guscott said the use of the tracker was optional and customers would not be denied insurance based on their fitness levels.Guscott said the information obtained from the device would be subject to the same security controls as other personal information supplied by the customer. The data will not be shared with health authorities or anyone else.
