Modest growth in margin loan balances
The margin lending market, still struggling to regain the momentum it had before Australian equities went into a bear market late in 2007, had mixed results in the December quarter.According to Reserve Bank data released yesterday, total margin loan balances rose from A$11.2 billion in the September quarter to $11.5 billion in the December quarter.However, the number of client accounts fell from 156,000 in the September quarter to 155,000 in December.Margin calls rose from 0.52 calls per day per 1000 clients in the September quarter to 0.75 in December.At the market's peak in December 2007, margin lenders managed $41.6 billion of loans for 248,000 clients.
