Multiple credit card fraud incidents common
Data on credit card and other types of fraud from the Australian Bureau of Statistics points to card fraud as a repeat experience for some in Australia.The most common fraud type recorded by the ABS was card fraud, with 1.1 million people (or 5.9 per cent of the population aged 15 and over) experiencing card fraud, an increase from 3.7 per cent of the population in 2010/11 when the ABS last collected data on the topic."Just under a third, 31 per cent, of persons experiencing card fraud reported experiencing two or more incidents," the ABS said.The ABS conducted in-person interviews to collect this data, one of numerous topics covered in its Multipurpose Household Survey.Overall, an estimated 1.6 million Australians experienced personal fraud, or 8.5 per cent of the population aged 15 and over. This was a rise from 6.7 per cent in 2010/11.
