Mutual mecu plots a nationalist turn
bankmecu may be aiming to widen its target market with a name change.The Melbourne-based mutual recently lodged two trade marks with IP Australia: Bank of Australia and Responsible Banking.Rowan Dowland, general manager development at bankmecu, wrote in an email that "as part of ongoing planning, the bank has explored other names as options and registered the business name Bank of Australia following approval from APRA and ASIC."The bank has now decided to submit a trademark application for a brand mark including this business name with the aim of strengthening the protection afforded to it as the owner of the registered business name."No decision has been made whether the bank will adopt a new name."bankmecu adopted its present branding three years ago.
