MYOB enters mobile payments market
Accounting software company MYOB has entered the mobile payments market with the launch of a product that will allow users to swipe debit and credit cards on their mobile phones.MYOB PayDirect has been designed for use by the company's small business customer base. Users download an application and attach a small card-reader to their smartphone. The product offers two options: payment only, which enables SMEs to turn their smartphones into mobile point-of-sale terminals; and an integrated service, where the app is linked to the user's debtors and contacts files.PayDirect will work on both the iOS and Android operating systems. MYOB worked in partnership with Mint Wireless on the development of the product.MYOB's general manager of design and user experience, Ben Ross, said PayDirect would be of use to tradesmen and others who work "on the go" and need a convenient way of processing payments.Ross said it could also be used in retail outlets, where it could replace standard point-of-sale terminals. "It will cost less than a point of sale terminal," he said.MYOB has not announced its charges, but they will include purchase of the card reader, a monthly fee and transaction fees.Mobile point-of-sale terminals have been slow to take off in Australia compared with growth in the US market. Mint Wireless has forecast that A$7 billion of payments will be processed through mPOS terminals this year, rising to $20 billion in 2017.PayPal, Paymate (which is owned by FlexiGroup) and Mint Wireless have products in the market, and Commonwealth Bank plans to offer one too.
