Outlook unfavourable for Customers ATM
A more crowded ATM market, the rising popularity of cash-out at Eftpos and subdued consumer confidence are all working to trim the sails of Customers Limited, the largest owner of automatic teller machines in Australia.Customers said it now expected a pre-tax profit for the year to June 2011 of between A$16 million and $18 million, down from a profit of $24.8 million in 2010.The number of cash withdrawals at ATMs owned by an operator other than a card-holders' own bank was around 33 million a month before more transparent charging came into force, in March 2009.Transaction numbers are now down to 26 million a month, with a dip in the first quarter of 2011, following a small rise in the second half of 2010.Customers has attempted to offset this by increasing its fees (to $2.50 in many cases, compared with an industry benchmark of $2).
