Parking machines broken by braille
New ANZ debit cards with raised braille dots have wreaked havoc with parking machines in New Zealand's capital city, forcing the city council to tell people they can no longer use any credit or debit cards to pay for parking. The dots on the cards, designed to help visually-impaired people know which way to insert the card into eftpos terminals and vending machines, have damaged 160 parking machines so far.The Wellington City Council will now have to replace all the card readers in its 512 pay-and-display parking machines. Many of the machines have had the ANZ cards become jammed in them. But according to the council, even if a machine is not jammed, once an ANZ debit card with raised dots is used in it the machine will no longer read any credit or debit card.
