Personal credit card numbers hit five-year low
Whether it is the introduction of so many "buy now pay later" products or a backlash against ridiculously high interest rates, Australian consumers continue to empty their wallets of credit cards.According to the latest Reserve Bank card payment data, the number of personal credit card accounts stood at 14.5 million in July - a decline of 2.3 per cent over 12 months and the smallest number recorded since 2014.Consumers continue to make about the same number of purchases on credit cards - 24.7 million in July compared with 22.9 million at the same time last year - but they have less revolving credit.Balances accruing interest stood at A$28.7 billion in July - down 6.6 per cent over 12 months and the lowest amount recorded since 2007.Meanwhile, the use of debit continues to grow. There were 624 million debit purchase transactions in July - the highest figures in the data series, which goes back to 2002.The value of debit purchase transactions was $28.4 billion in July, compared with $23.4 billion for purchases on personal credit cards.
