Personal insolvencies dip in December quarter
The number of personal insolvencies fell for the second quarter in a row during the December 2008 quarter.The Insolvency and Trustee Service Australia recorded 8702 insolvencies during the December 2008 quarter, down from 9007 during the September quarter and 9201 during the June quarter.Outright bankruptcies, of which there were 6649 during the December quarter, followed this trend.Debt agreements under part nine of the Bankruptcy Act (and designed to provide a low-cost alternative to those with a low value of debts) peaked in September at 2202 and fell to 1991 during December.ITSA published the quarterly data on insolvencies on Friday.By contrast, company insolvencies are showing the opposite trend, with 1011 companies opting for voluntary administration during November 2008. Appointments ranged between 680 and 876 each month from February to October 2008.Company bankruptcies are following a similar pattern with 1563 appointments of receivers during November, compared with between 1000 and 1296 over the 10 months to October 2008.The Australian Securities and Investments Commission published data on company insolvencies in late December.
