Post banking talk stirs once more
Business Spectator, through columnist Christopher Joye, yesterday reported that the Department of Communications prepared draft legislation that will amend the Australian Postal Corporation Act 1989 to facilitate the entry into banking of Australia Post.Whether this is likely to become government policy and make it to parliament is less clear.A spokesperson for the minister for communications, Senator Conroy, denied to Business Spectator that the government commissioned any such work. There is some conjecture around the banking sector over the direction of the government's strategic plans for Australia Post, which is presumed to be dusting off past investigations into the merit of widening its financial services offerings since the hiring of the former Australian CEO of National Australia Bank, Ahmed Fahour, to run Post.
