Proprietary Visa card cleared at ANZ Stadium
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, in a decision that jars with the ruling in relation to Caltex and Woolworths, changed its mind over a much smaller planned contactless payment system and will not oppose Stadium Australia's proposal to offer payment options at ANZ Stadium in the former Olympic precinct in Sydney to holders of a Visa payWave contactless card, on the grounds that it is in the public interest. The ACCC said that under this proposal, Stadium Australia will also introduce 'swipe or dip' processing facilities with most Visa and MasterCard payment systems accepted (but excluding MasterCard's PayPass option). The ACCC accepted the argument of Stadium Australia that the right to insist on one contactless payment technology over rivals was required to enable investment in credit card facility infrastructure even though "the arrangement will have an effect on competition between card networks, and will also affect consumer choice in respect of contactless payment options."
