The Australian dollar is on the wane while use of renminbi continues its advance as a medium of exchange in world trade. The use of the Australian dollar as a share of international payments eased to 1.54 per cent on October 2015 down from 1.75 per cent in January 2014, a report by payments messaging co-op Swift highlighted yesterday.Use of renminbi pushed on to 1.92 per cent from 1.39 per cent over the same period.Hong Kong is the principal money centre initiating "inbound and outbound traffic for customer initiated and institutional payments," Swift said, with 69 per cent originating in that city.Mainland China accounted for only a 4.9 per cent share.Swift led its report with a focus on the significance of renminbi in inter-Asian trade."The Chinese currency is now the second most active currency between Japan and China/Hong Kong with the RMB accounting for seven per cent of payments, by value, compared to three per cent two years ago."The IMF said last week it would include the renminbi as the fifth inclusion in the currency basket for Special Drawing Rights.
