SMSF borrowing levels still modest
The value of borrowings by trustees of self-managed superannuation funds at June 30 was equivalent to 1.4 per cent of total SMSF assets, according to a new Australian Taxation Office report. This means about A$7.1 billion of the sector's $506 billion of assets are funded with borrowing.The ATO released its latest statistical overview of the SMSF sector yesterday. There are now 509,000 funds holding 31 per cent of superannuation assets.The proportion of funds with borrowings increased from 1.1 per cent in 2008 to 3.7 per cent in 2012.The majority of borrowings were used to purchase residential and commercial property.
