Storm over theft of Sony card data
The apparent copying of some or all of the 77 million customer records held by entertainment giant Sony of users of its popular Playstation console is generating concern over the misuse of credit card details.A report in The Australian newspaper estimates the incident has affected around 715,000 consumers in Australia, the majority of whom are likely to have credit cardsSome police and security experts have advised those affected to monitor their credit card accounts, though few credible anecdotes of misuse of credit card details have emerged since news of the compromised data broke earlier this week. The original hack dates from early last week, Sony says. According to some reports, it is the largest ever loss of confidential customer-data of this type. The Banking Code of Practice and credit card scheme rules provide for reversals of fraudulent transactions.
