Sixty per cent of Australian smartphone owners have participated in mobile banking activity, ranking Australia fifth in the world for smartphone banking adoption.The latest Australian Payments Clearing Association digital payments report, Milestones, shows a clear trend away from cash and cheques to digital payments and e-commerce.Cash withdrawals from ATMs were down 5.5 per cent in 2015 and the number of cheques written fell 16.3 per cent last year, APCA said.On the other hand, debit and credit card transactions numbers increased by 11.1 per cent and direct entry transaction volume increased by 6.3 per cent last year.APCA found that cheque usage in Australia is declining faster than in a number of other countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan and France.Online sales increased by 11.2 per cent. Australia has the fifth highest uptake of cross-border shopping, with 66 per cent of online shoppers reporting that they have bought from overseas retailers.Among Australians with a smartphone, 45 per cent have used their phone to make purchases.Online banking is the most popular web activity for the 86 per cent of households with internet activity, with 72 per cent of internet users accessing online banking. A high proportion of online connections to bank accounts was via mobiles.
