The Wikramanayake rabbit hunt
Ever ready for another book, a Bloomberg banking veteran has the first long account of the roots of incoming Macquarie CEO Shemara Wikramanayake. Aaron Patrick, feature writer for the Financial Review, had the tale at the weekend. An elite restoration of an enterprising and resourceful Sri Lankan dynasty; Wikramanayake as colonial officer, it's a better place to start than as first woman CEO of this Hill Samuel offshoot, and hats off on earning the job. Wikramanayake replaces Nicholas Moore as managing director of Macquarie at the end of November.Largely unmolested by the financial services royal commission so far, Moore will be a witness at the upcoming policy - meaning governance - round in Kenneth Hayne's next set of hearings in Sydney in November.Wikramanayake has to be simplifying a few things in Macquarie world, doing much more of what they do best for one and avoiding the Alphabet Inc trap. With Macquarie Bank both needed and optional, Wikramanayake has to build the share price and she may need more than profits to get that done.
