Tyro claims least cost savings of A$1.5m for merchants
Australian business bank, Tyro, has claimed its "Tap & Save" least-cost routing process has allowed merchant customers on its system to shave A$1.5 million off their payments processing fees in eight months.Under the banner of "put the customer first" Tyro is diverting revenue away from Mastercard and Visa. Since its inception, Tap & Save has seen over 11 million transactions processed through the cheaper eftpos network.Stats showing increases in merchant acquisition - beyond Tyro's Q1 AGM figures - have not been released with sufficient detail to verify the claims made by the company about its eftpos process. At its recent AGM, Tyro issued customer numbers for 1Q 19, showing its merchant numbers as 24,834 vs the 19,490 for Q1 18. This 27 per cent boost in Q1 figures was at least in part explained by Tyro's work in pushing for least cost options for its SME customers. Specific sectors: • Hospitality: nearly $750,000 in service fees saved, so far (pubs and bars saving 15 per cent on average, over 10 per cent for fast food and catering);• Retail: over $545,000 in service fees saved;• Health and other services have saved $80,000 on fees;• Cabfare has saved over $35,000 on service fees;• Jaycar, electronics retailer, has saved nearly $35,000 on service fees.
