VENDORS COUNT THE COST OF FADING CARDS OPPORTUNITY
Some industry executives attending the Smart Card Summit yesterday found it difficult to contain their frustration at the ongoing confusion surrounding the rapidly sinking access card project.Kevin Beck from Datacard told the shadow minister Tanya Plibersek that "60 to 70 per cent of your concerns could be allayed by looking at the tender documents."Beck suggested that "the lack of information about this proposal is a significant issue."It was a brave move by an executive from a company tendering for access card work, particularly considering that all vendors who have submitted tenders or joint tenders have been threatened with legal action if they discuss any aspect of the project in public.Kevin was not the only industry representative who expressed their dismay that the government's reluctance to release and discuss all details is putting the project in danger."We have spent millions and millions on this and we are not the only ones," said one senior executive from a firm seeking a role in several tenders."The fact is that a majority of people want the card but the government's current proposal has significant issues."Another executive said, "we have been on this since 2004, we are just a smaller player but the expense has been significant."He said that a lot of the work his firm had done during the period when Joe Hockey was minister had been wasted because neither that minister nor those bureaucrats who held senior roles in the Department of Human Services were now running the project.
