VISA COUNTS ON GOVERNMENT TO UNDERPIN EMV
Government adoption of chip technology will drive banks and other card issuers to migrate their cards to the EMV standard for chip-based cards according to Visa International.Visa's Australia/New Zealand head of operations Greg Storey, told the Smart Card Summit yesterday that consumers are concerned about their privacy, the security of their ID and want new toys, such as mobile phones with payment functionality."If a government is going to put chip cards in the hands of consumers, the consumer will ask 'why isn't my bank issued card as secure as my government card'?"Storey said that more than two million Australian Visa cards and 307,000 point of sale readers, or about 60 per cent of the fleet, were now EMV compliant. However, consumers were increasingly demanding innovations and wanted, in particular, to be able to use their mobile phone for small transactions said Storey."We are all struggling collectively with the demands of consumers," he said.
