Westpac 'will offer' Apple Pay, in time
There's another long, Westpac bicentennial read in the Financial Review today, an interview with the CEO Brian Hartzer that is heavy on tech themes. Hartzer pushes back on modern fluff, such as banks as IT companies, saying: "Where we can get an advantage over time is in an ability to really understand what is important to customers, and line up your business systems to deliver against that." In the AFR interview, Hartzer also engages on the record on the bank's failure last week, alongside three other banks, in a bid to collectively bargain over Apple Pay.Hartzer says Westpac has yet to see any evidence that ANZ, the early mover, has gained any advantage, despite data ANZ has outlined, at a high level, to support the contrary view.He says he remains hopeful Westpac will offer Apple Pay to its customers in due course, despite disagreeing with the ACCC's reasoning."We thought this was an important discussion to have because we think customers should be able to choose which wallet app they want to use," Hartzer says.
