Westpac iMessage adds to mobile banking options
Westpac has extended its mobile banking application, allowing its customers to access banking services while texting their contacts on their iPhones. In a media release last week, George Frazis, chief executive of Westpac Consumer Bank, claimed the Westpac for iMessage service, was "a first for Australian banking".The feature will initially only be available to Westpac customers and, according to Travis Tyler, general manager of consumer digital at Westpac, there is no intention to extend it further until after "customer feedback" and uptake of the service have been assessed. Tyler confirmed that the same terms and conditions will apply for payments and transfers made through Westpac's other mobile and iPhone banking service - namely a A$500 daily limit and a $1,000 weekly limit. No new or additional fees or charges will be applied.Tyler also explained that the feature will not run on Australia's soon to be launched New Payments Platform. "The current version of Westpac for iMessage will not support PayID and is processed through the bank's own payments platform," he said. This added capability follows the launch - also announced last week - of Westpac Banking Skill, another mobile banking feature that allows access to account balance, recent spending history and reward points status through Amazon's newly-launched voice service, Alexa.
