Westpac New Zealand trials Google Glass, iBeacon
Westpac New Zealand will trial both Google Glass and Apple's iBeacon technology for the Westpac Group from the end of this month. The New Zealand unit of Westpac has become something of a test-bed for digital banking for the group, trialling new technologies in a smaller and more lightly regulated market before shifting to the bigger Australian market.Westpac New Zealand's chief digital officer, Simon Pomeroy, said Westpac had already begun trials in-house of its 'Cash Tank' application on Google Glass and would start trials of the iBeacon low-powered Bluetooth technology in branches later in February. It will be the first bank in New Zealand to try the technologies, which have not been adopted by Westpac in Australia.Pomeroy said 2014 was poised globally to be the year of wearable technology, and Westpac aimed to have its 'Cash Tank' balance-checking app ready for a full launch when Google rolls out its spectacle-like wearable computers in New Zealand later in the year.Cash Tank shows an account balance without the need to log in and is already available in New Zealand on Sony's Smartwatch."By the end of this year, our customers will be able to walk into a shop wearing their Google Glasses, see something they like and instantly check their bank balance, which will be displayed in their peripheral vision - that's pretty cool," Pomeroy said.Westpac customers will also be able to transfer money between their own bank accounts using Glass.Apple's iBeacon technology allows a shop or bank branch to broadcast special offers to devices using the technology, or know when a customer has arrived to pick up a pre-ordered item.iBeacon has been used in parks, concert venues and stadiums, as well as in restaurants and by car companies, Pomeroy said."This is an opportunity to add another dimension to customer service," he said.
