Whittling away at the credit card bill
Australian consumers continued to whittle away at their credit card balances over the last financial year.According to the latest Reserve Bank payment data, the average balance accruing interest on credit and charge card accounts was A$1992 in June - down from $2000 in May and $2060 in June last year.There were 16.5 million credit and charge cards on issue in June. There was an average of 12.1 purchases on each card account in June, with monthly spend averaging $1540.Total annual spend on credit and charge cards rose 4.9 per cent to A$299.2 billion.There were 42.9 million debit cards on issue in June.
