Wright writes down pre-paid card business

04 March 2013 5:48PM
US payment processor Wright Express has taken a write-down on its pre-paid card business in Australia. The annual report for Wright shows the business recognised a US$16.2 million impairment of goodwill associated with Wright Express Australia Prepaid.Wright acquired the pre-paid card businesses (and also the Motorcharge fuel card business) of Retail Decisions, in Australia, in late 2010, for A$363 million.Wright said: "The company determined that pricing pressure in the prepaid gift card product in Australia would result in lower future earnings than forecasted at the time of the purchase of Wright Express Prepaid Australia."It said transaction processing revenue decreased by around US$800,000 over 2012, "primarily due to lower transaction based fees from Wright Express Australia Prepaid."The company said that in 2012 it processed approximately 16 million payment processing transactions in Australia, up from approximately 15 million in 2011.
