The number of ATMs in service around Australia has continued to fall and is now at its lowest level in 16 years.
According to the latest figures from the Australian Payments Network, there were 25,168 ATMs around the country in the June 2022 quarter, down from 25,327 in the March quarter.
ATM numbers fell heavily in 2020 as bars and clubs where ATMs were located closed during COVID.
There was some recovery in late 2020 and early 2021 but over the past 12 months the long-term decline in ATM numbers has resumed.
Numbers peaked in the December quarter 2016, when there were 32,879 ATMs in service. Since then the number has fallen by 23.4 per cent.
Over that period, the ATM market has become the domain of third-party providers. According to Reserve Bank data, the value of cash withdrawals at independent deployer ATMs has grown steadily, while the overall value of cash withdrawals has remained flat.
