Gryphon Capital Partners, one of the biggest local investors in the mortgage securities market, has agreed to a takeover by global investment manager Barings. Gryphon Capital Partners owns Gryphon Capital Investments, which is the investment manager of ASX-listed Gryphon Capital Investment Trust, as well as unlisted institutional funds investing in structured finance. Founded in 2014, Gryphon has A$2.6 billion of funds under management, including around $470 million in the listed trust. Barings has US$347 billion of funds under management, including US$8.2 billion in global structured finance assets. Gryphon said in a statement that the takeover would allow it to scale its investment strategy through Barings’ global platform, while giving Barings a bigger presence in Australia. Barings said it would support Gryphon’s long-term growth strategy. Gryphon founders and portfolio managers Steven Fleming and Ashley Burtenshaw will continue as portfolio managers for Gryphon Capital Investments, with no change in personnel.
