Australia’s domestic debit scheme, Eftpos, is widening its aspirations in the local ecommerce market to include a “national QR payments utility”.
This will be built by the team at the payments app Beem It, which Eftpos bought from three of the major banks in November 2020.
Eftpos CEO Stephen Benton said Eftpos undertook a global tender process before opting for the in-house solution
The new QR code payments capability from Eftpos, is expected to be in market as early as July 2021, with multiple merchants in trial.
In a statement announcing the move, Eftpos said the new national QR code utility will be designed to be low cost, with "value adds" for merchants and consumers such as loyalty, offers and receipts.
The national rollout is expected to be completed in 2022.
