Briefs: Sezzle director steps down, 'pawn tickets' land pawnbroker in court
Sezzle director Kathleen Pierce-Gilmore has tendered her resignation and will step down from the board at the end of this month. Sezzle said Pierce-Gilmore has started a new job, which could create conflicts for her in her role at Sezzle. The loss-making company was at pains to point out that her decision “was not made because of any disagreement with the company on any matter relating to the company’s operations, policies or practices”.
A Cairns-based pawnbroker, Cash Lenders Pty Ltd, and its former director Colin Hulbert have been charged with engaging in credit activity without a licence. Hulbert has also been with engaging in conduct that contravened an order banking him from engaging in credit activities. ASIC alleges that Cash Lenders issued “pawn tickets” that were, in reality, credit contracts. The tickets allowed Cash Lenders to take debt recovery action for unpaid amounts. The company has also been charged with altering their books before providing them to ASIC.
