Three financial services companies, Mastercard, EML and Commonwealth Bank, are working on a trial of digital payments service on New South Wales public transport.
itnews reported that the trial will involve 10,000 commuters who will swap their Opal card for an electronic version in their smartphone digital wallet.
The pilot will also involve extending the use of Opal to include taxis and Ubers.
Since October last year, the Opal payments platform has allowed commuters to keep track of all their public transport payments, including those made with contactless debit or credit cards.
Victoria has had an electronic version of its myki card since last year, allowing Android users to tap on an off using GooglePay.
