PEXA in a pickle

Repeated outages at PEXA and questions over the accuracy of its performance reporting have drawn the attention of the Australian Registrars’ National Electronic Conveyancing Council (ARNECC).

PEXA, which in effect holds a monopoly in the domain of electronic conveyancing in Australia, has suffered more than a dozen outages over the last month or so, Banking Day has been told.

PEXA has long claimed a perfect or near perfect uptime record, such as at the performance dashboard at its website.

There were major outages on 13 January and 22 January, when major bank connections with PEXA failed.

Banking Day has seen dozens of incident reports from conveyancers over recent months.

ARNECC may have otherwise dropped the ball on fostering interoperability in conveyancing, but may be stepping up to press PEXA to clarify its performance reporting.

Late last year, the ACCC’s chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb confirmed its examination of the alleged anti-competitive conduct of PEXA in e-conveyancing amounts to an “assessment” rather than an “investigation”.

There is mounting pressure on the Labor government to support a formal referral to the ACCC.
