Fewer investors using margin loans

The number of investors using margin loans to fund investments fell in the September quarter but, despite this, there was a small increase in margin loan balances during the quarter.

The latest Reserve Bank margin lending report shows a 2.6 per cent fall in the number of client accounts - down from 151,000 in the June quarter to 147,000 in the September quarter.

Client account numbers fell 5.8 per cent over the 12 months to September.

Margin loan balances rose from A$11.78 billion in the June quarter to $11.86 billion in the September quarter - an increase of 0.7 per cent.

Loan balances rose six per cent over the 12 months to September.

Protected investment loan balances fell 0.4 per cent to $491 million in the September quarter, compared with the previous quarter, but were up 26 per cent over 12 months.

Margin calls rose from 0.56 per 1000 clients per day during the June quarter to 0.59 per 1000 clients per day in the September quarter.
