Commonwealth Bank offered HBOS "as much as $3 billion" to buy Bank of Western Australia the Financial Review reported. The CBA offer did not extend to other HBOS business in Australia.

The newspaper reported that National Australia Bank and ANZ also "sought to convince HBOS to sell".

The newspaper also reported that Suncorp "is understood to have received informal approaches from larger rivals including CBA and ANZ."
