Retail bias at CBA

Commonwealth Bank continues to have a bias toward driving growth in its retail banking business.

Ian Narev, chief executive of CBA told the Financial Review: "The big prize, above all, [is] realising what I would describe as the latent growth in that core franchise: retail and small-business banking."

Narev used the interview, the Boss insert in the newspaper, to recap themes from the bank's strategic briefing two months ago.

"We see a big opportunity here and we see an enormous strategic challenge" he said. "Because if we are not willing to adapt our business models to seize the ­opportunity and respond to the challenges of this technology, we will get left behind.

'The next chapter is to really drive the culture towards the customer and collaboration."
