Uber strife at Cabcharge AGM

Investors in Cabcharge voted against its remuneration report at its annual meeting in Sydney yesterday, forcing a vote for a spill of the board, which failed.

Cabcharge director Rodney Gilmour avoided any shareholder revolt against his appointment five months ago by resigning this week, an action disclosed only hours before the AGM.

Gilmour joined the board in June as an independent director, but has past associations with the company.

Shareholder agitator Stephen Mayne also failed to be elected to the board.

Cabcharge's chair, Russell Balding, used the AGM to slam competitor Uber, and its UberX service.

"UberX ride sharing is dangerous, unsupervised and, as the NSW government has said, illegal," he told shareholders at the taxi payments company's annual general meeting.

Balding also said US-based Uber did not pay any tax in Australia and the structure of the service made it difficult for governments to track the money earned by drivers.
