Mortgage stress on the rise

John Kavanagh

The proportion of households struggling to make mortgage payments more than doubled between June and October, according to new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

An ABS survey, Household Impacts of COVID-19, found that 5 per cent of households reported problems paying the mortgage for their home or an investment property in October – up from 2 per cent in June.

Among households renting, 4 per cent reported difficulty paying their rent – unchanged from June.
