New ANZ CEO starts early

Nuno Matos, the incoming chief executive of ANZ, will be starting earlier than planned.

Matos, 57, will now commence on Monday 12 May, a few days after his predecessor, Shayne Elliott, presents the half-year results from ANZ.

Matos“has been able to secure the early fulfilment of his commitments with his previous employer (HSBC) and bring forward his start date” Paul O’Sullivan, the ANZ chair said.

This may simply be a case of Matos negotiating an early end to his gardening leave with HSBC.

There are other ways to read this.

Matos will be eager to assess the strengths and weaknesses of ANZ including its principal strategic projects; the integration of Suncorp Bank and the rollout of ANZ Plus.
Equally, ANZ’s board may be eager to put the Elliott era behind it, with its trio of scandals in the institutional bank.
