101 decent credit cards

Ian Rogers and Jason Bryce
There are some decent offers available in the credit card space at moment, so it would be a shame if the gift of a new credit card did not prove a popular choice this Christmas - sound financial habits start early, after all.

RateCity listed 101 decent credit cards, following a request. A lot of them are scarcely known, which is a pity given many are well-priced, well-structured cards.

Michelle Hutchison, consumer advocate with RateCity, lists 66 personal credit cards with extended warranties.

The annual fee for these cards ranges from nothing (Bankwest's Zero and Gold MasterCards) to $700 for a Citibank Select Credit Card.

The average fee is $157.

Sixty-one of these offer an extended warranty for one year. Five offer an extended warranty for two years.

These five are all platinum cards by Westpac and have an average annual fee of $244.

Hutchison wrote that these credit card providers offer an automatic extended warranty on most major personal and household purchases made using the credit card. They cover a specified period (of one or two years) after the original manufacturer's warranty expires.

She said extended warranties can be expensive and are dependent on the cost of the item.

A two-year extended warranty for a $2000 television from Harvey Norman would cost $230 in her example.

Of 35 cards that offer a price guarantee scheme, the average annual fee is $178, according to the RateCity database.
