Briefs: GSI director to be examined, Chinese group plans Australian private bank

  • The receivers of Gippsland Secured Investments will conduct a further public examination of directors at the Supreme Court of Victoria, beginning on Wednesday. Five hearing dates are scheduled from then until mid-March. The Trust Company forced the appointment of receivers to debenture-funded GSI in December 2003.
  • A Chinese investment management company is planning to set up a private banking operation in Australia, according to a Reuters report. The proposed bank's parent, Australia Capital Investment Group, said it would cater to wealthy Chinese living and investing in Australia. The report said the group has retained PricewaterhouseCoopers and Baker & McKenzie as advisers but has yet to make a formal application for a banking licence.
