National Australia Bank needed to hire 400 frontline business bankers, costing A$200 million, to reverse about 500 jobs lost since late 2011.

The Australian reported on work by Macquarie industry analyst Mike Wiblin, who called for a near fourfold lift in the planned investment of $40 million by the bank in the business bank's systems.

A spend of $150 million appealed to Wiblin.
